"We're takin' it back to the old school..."
“Cos we’re the old fools, who are so cool 🤘”
As a team of over 30’s (as much as we feel we’ve not even hit our 20’s yet), we love a bit of retro – we think that’s what the kids are calling it these days.
Two decades have a very special place in our hearts. The bright, neon filled 80’s, and the Britpop-y 90’s. Why? Because Amie & Emily were born in those decades.
As well as Amie, the 80’s gave us Wham!, Madonna, Whitney, Toto and Men At Work; as well as classic movies like The Goonies, Dirty Dancing and Back to the Future.
Whilst technology had started to advance in the 80’s, it wasn’t as commonplace as it is today. People spoke to each other face to face and if you had your photo taken, you had to just deal with the result – there was no opportunity to check it out and delete it if you didn’t like it. People wrote letters instead of texts/emails, kids played games in person not online, and double denim and shell suits were very much accepted. If you wanted to buy something, you had to actually go to a shop, and if you wanted to listen to music on the go there were two options. A boombox, or a Walkman. The 80’s had its obstacles and issues, but everyone we ask remembers it as a bright, fun, simple time. “Alexa, play Club Tropicana!”

Now to the 90’s. One of the very first gifts the 1990’s gave us was Emily, and it just kept getting better from there.
The Spice Girls, Oasis, Take That, East 17, Blur, S Club 7, PJ & Duncan – the music of the 90’s was top tier. It may seem like only one movie, Titanic, was released in the 90’s but that is not the case. The 90’s gave us the greats; Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park, Clueless, The Shawshank Redemption – the list is long!
Mobile phones became more popular, despite being the size of a small child. The Walkman was replaced by the Discman (which was actually very inconvenient due to the size difference), and the popular Gameboy was soon taken over by the likes of the Nintendo 64 and Playstation. We all had tiny little creatures to take care of in the form of a Tamagotchi, and Blockbuster was the place to be on a Friday night (who else remembers the smell of that place?). The internet became an actual place, where you could meet new people from all over the world. Dial up internet was a bit of a pain, but we stuck with it! When we think back to the 90’s, we try to forget the bad bits, and always remember the fun we had – even if that fun involved sitting at home on a Saturday morning watching Live & Kicking, or arguing about whether Ross & Rachel were, in fact, on a break. “Alexa, play Spice Up Your Life!”

We haven’t got any pictures of Jayne and Andy that we’re able to share right now but we imagine that Andy most definitely had a permed mullet and Jayne sported a crimped bob and neon fishnet gloves!
Now we’ve got you feeling nostalgic, here are our absolute favourite bits of retro merch!
The Rubix’s Cube
That’s right. A Rubix’s cube, with your name on it. We need say no more.
The BIC Biro
This classic pen featured in everyone’s pencil case or pen pot. It’s been renewed and is now available with a modern metal barrel.
How much fun was it seeing these bouncing down the stairs? A brilliant giveaway for children, and the young at heart adults!
